Choosing Between ODK, KoBoToolbox, and REDCap

There is no single "best" data collection tool — only the right tool for a given study design, team, and budget. We are regularly asked why we might pick ODK over KoBoToolbox, or REDCap over either of them, so here is how we actually make that call.

ODK is our default for complex field surveys with skip logic, GPS capture, and offline-first requirements across large field teams — it is flexible and well supported, but it asks more of your form design upfront. KoBoToolbox, built on similar foundations, is a strong choice when a partner organization needs a friendlier hosted dashboard and faster onboarding for a smaller team.

REDCap earns its place in clinical and longitudinal health research, where audit trails, participant tracking across multiple visits, and REDCap's compliance features matter more than offline field flexibility. In practice, many of our larger projects end up using more than one of these tools for different parts of the same study — and that is usually the right answer.
